Dr. Eshraghi is an involved surgeon scientist at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine teaching undergraduate and medical students as well as resident physicians and fellows in the clinic, at the bedside, in the operating room, and in his research lab.

Dr. Eshraghi teaching resident Aida Nourbakhsh M.D., Ph.D about anatomy.

My Teaching Philosophy

My education philosophy as a clinician who teaches daily at bedside and in operating room, results from the leadership experiences and achievements that I have gained at three very different high-volume clinical setting include Chief of Otology and Neurotology at Jackson Memorial Hospital (one of the   county hospitals in the country, where I succeeded in improving the Otolaryngology care of underserved diverse populations), Co-Director of U-Health Ear Institute (renowned world-class private Ear Institute with more than 8 Surgeons, 27 Audiologists and 7 scientists), Chief of ENT at Miami VA (the largest academic VAMC of the VISEN 8, serving our veterans). These experiences have allowed me to not only understand the need of patients in very different clinical settings, but also to master the flexibility necessary for the adjustment in the leadership of various systems of healthcare delivery, preparing me to face the new and ongoing changes in healthcare and to teach and mentor my students at various levels of their career effectively in various health care systems. As a graduate with highest honors from the prestigious Sorbonne-University of Paris and a fellow in two very different world class medical school Institutions (UCLA and the University of Miami), my academic training and credentials have also prepared me for these important responsibilities.

In summary, my philosophy of education is based on the use of an interactive approach, the integration of clinical based evidence in my clinical lectures and the use modern technology (Internet, Video, Interactive modules, Chat GPT). Continuous self-evaluation to improve my skills and written material, and the accessibility (personal and emails) to my students at all levels of training (undergraduate or medical student, resident, or fellows). My mentorship style is based on a sincere desire to help develop future “servant leaders”. I take a personal interest in the mentoring relationship, acting as a positive role model and reinforcing positive attitude and integrity and the same time of providing constructive and honest feedback. I have volunteered for many years as one of the faculty mentors for students at our school, service within the University of Miami and teaching has always been a priority for me. As the Director of the Otology Medial Student Clerkship, active member of the ACGME committee, and the Director of HRL Research Fellowship, I am very committed to the education of our medical students, residents, and fellows. My commitment to an extremely high ethical standard in research conduct and patient care have led me to volunteer as a Faculty Member for the World Health Organization Collaborating Center in Ethics and Global Health Policy. I was honored to be elected by our faculties to serve at the Medical School Faculty Council (where I was the only representative of all our 40 Otolaryngology faculties for the last 10 years and elected to serve asVice Speaker). These opportunities definitively enabled me to better understand the educational needs of the school and its students, and the challenges faced by faculty at all levels in succeeding clinically and academically in their teaching and educational effort within an ever-changing landscape. I contributed to start a new educational WRVu this year to recognize and compensate faculty who are heavily engaged in educational effort in our institution with specific metrics. I am the representative of the council in the oversight committee for the medical school curriculum and one of the 8 active members of the professionalism and promotion committee of our medical students. As I have been always a pioneer in advocating for equality (and when appropriate equity) and diversity, I was invited to serve as the first male faculty of our institution, on the advisory board of WIAM (Women in Academic Medicine) since 2021. I also serve at the Provost Private Board for promotion and tenure committee, where we evaluate the faculty promotion and awarding tenure based on their commitment to teaching and academic accomplishments. My passion and commitment to the advancement of otolaryngology has resulted in my significant involvement in the local, state, national and international level. I have served as the president of the Greater Miami ENT Society since 2007, working on improving the level of patient care by organizing and directing the multiannual educational meetings. I also was elected as president of the nation’s largest state Otolaryngology society, the Florida Society of Otolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (2016), and continue to serve in its Executive Board of Directors, preparing educational meetings that impact the quality of health care provided by our private practice otolaryngologist. I was instrumental to incorporate the educational need of ENT Physician Assistants and Nurse practitioners of our state within our Florida Society of Otolaryngology and providing them the opportunity to practice a higher level of care. I am also active at the American Academy of Otolaryngology & Head and Neck Surgery, and was recipient of the “Honor Award” in 2009 for my contributions; I served over the last 5 years within all main Otology and Neurotology educational committees of our Academy related to my field of Otology and neurotology: the Education Committee (Committee Excellence Awarded in 2017),Telehealth Committee, Hearing Committee, Implantable and Hearing aids committee, and Skull base committee and currently being honored to serve on Board of Governor Committee (Governance & Society engagement). My expert series educational course at AAO on “The leading edge, what is new in hearing research” is renewed yearly by the academy with always outstanding feedback from the attendees. I meticulously review all this feedback shared by AAO members and make the adjustment to be sure that this course is the most up to date and useful possible to our ENT community. I am also invited regularly as a guest speaker and chairperson at major international societies, where I have the opportunity to teach and share the knowledge gain in our country with our colleagues around the world. i.e, World Congress of Audiology (and SFR 2024), International Federation of Otolaryngology Society in 2017 (IFOS), Balkan and West-Asian ENT Societies (2024), European Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck surgery (2024). I started an international fellowship in my own lab and had the privilege to teach and mentor many international fellows over the last 15 years. I continue this mentorship even after their return to their countries and maintain ties with my team from France, Israel, turkey, India, and Colombia.
